Things You Should Know About Eyelids

2 min read

The eyelids are folds of skin that slide over the eyeball to cover and protect it. The upper eyelid boundary is the eyebrow, and the lower one meets the cheek. Both are attached to the orbital bone by the external and internal lateral ligaments, respectively.

The eyelids’ skin is one of the thinnest in the body, allowing the connective tissue to fold and loosen during the opening and closing eyelid movements. Let us highlight some important things you should know about the eyelid.

Why Do Wrinkles Appear On The Eyelids?

The production of collagen and elastin over the years decreases so that the skin becomes thinner, and the eye area becomes increasingly vulnerable to external factors such as sun exposure. As a consequence, we lose firmness forming wrinkles in the area thereby creating a Double eyelid (ทำตา2ชั้น which is the term in Thai). Some of the main factors that can influence the appearance of lines in the eyes are the following:

  • Age

Over the years, we lose the hydration, flexibility, and firmness that we have naturally so that our skin becomes more flaccid and less elastic. This causes expression wrinkles that can deepen over time.

  • Solar exposition

The prolonged exposure to UV unprotected can also accelerate skin aging, such as wrinkles in the eyes and eyelids’ contour.

  • Smoking or alcohol

Bad habits such as smoking also harm our skin, since the harmful substances they contain prevent our tissues’ proper oxygenation. This causes wrinkles to be accentuated in the eye contour, among other parts of the face.

  • Forced gesturing

Certain facial expressions that we repeat continuously can also be marked overtime on our faces.

  • Stress

High and repetitive situations with stress, such as in the workplace or lack of rest, can also inhibit the production of collagen and elastin necessary to combat wrinkles on the skin.

  • Eyelid musculature problem

There may be a malfunction, weakness, or damage to the muscles that control the eyelids, such as drooping (ptosis) and producing wrinkles as signs of expression around them.
