What to expect during the first session with your counselor?

Each of us is constantly dealing with issues, but when things become overwhelming, it makes sense to seek help. unfortunately, mental health concerns are often ignored, and people often don’t want to consider counseling or therapy because they fear being branded ‘crazy.’ If you have decided to seek professional help and are located in Tulsa, consider checking Improving Lives Counseling Services. Expect to get an introduction

Your therapist will introduce themselves and share their intention of helping you without judgment. The first meeting is always important because it allows you to decide whether you feel comfortable around a counselor. They are expected to be nice and warm professionals who are there to help you with personal concerns but without being too personal. Confused? You can expect your therapist to be a guide and a friend, but not someone who is willing to sneak into your life to get secrets you don’t wish to reveal. 

Expect questions

The first session is also about understanding the client, and the counselor will want to know you better in order to understand how they can help you. You can expect questions like – 

  1. What brings you here? 
  2. What do you think are your immediate concerns?
  3. What are some of the symptoms you have been experiencing?

Most therapists will ask you to fill out a questionnaire, which will allow them to understand your feelings and determine a roadmap for treatment and action. 

Expect empathy

Whether you are talking about a failed marriage, childhood trauma, work pressure, or something as simple as dealing with your emotions, your counselor is there to listen. They will not force you to accept things but offer a more empathetic shoulder to lean on (of course, not literally). This is the place where you wouldn’t be judged for your past, present, or anything that bothers your mind. 

Expect to talk about the past

While you don’t have to talk about things that hurt you in the first session, opening up to your therapist is a great way to start. Your therapist would want to know about your past because it allows them to determine where the emotions are coming from and if they can recommend a few ways to cope with it. 

Finally, expect your therapist to ask you to return again.
