How Potatoes Can Substitute For Gluten Products

2 min read

Foods like baked potato are not only popular for their great taste but also for being gluten-free. Why? Foods containing gluten are not harmful, but people may have some level of intolerance for it. They may also have an immune condition that identifies gluten as a foreign body and then attacks it, leading to problems with the digestive system. Gluten is a protein found majorly in grains such as rye, rice, and wheat –yes, the major sources of dietary carbohydrate. It is, therefore, important to find something else that can replace these foods and still retain the nutritional value.

Potato is a wonderful vegetable that can replace gluten foods in any diet and give even more nutritional value. Potatoes come in a variety of gluten-free species; the rich southern species, russet, red, sweet, Irish, white, and Petites are just some examples.

Incorporating potatoes in your diet can add a whole lot of color, flavor, and style you never imagine. The best thing is they can be prepared in different ways. Let us see some:

  1. Baked potato pies: Sweet, soft, and sweet, baked potato pies are great for entering the potato world. Potato pies are easy to make and within a short time, you would be relishing the taste.
  2. Potato flour: Just as wheat flour is used for baking and other recipes, you can use potato flour for baking your biscuit, bread, and cakes. Potato flour is made from crushed potatoes and sometimes fortified with some vitamins.
  3. Baked and cooked potatoes: This is the easiest way to prepare your potatoes. You may decide to mash them or add olive oil. You can simply enjoy the meal or add some veggies.
  4. Scalloped potatoes: Scalloped potatoes are prepared by slicing the tuber thinly and evenly, add cheese, and bake.
  5. Chicken and potato casserole: Yummy and delightful, this food will blow your mind. Who says dieting cannot be fun? Cut the chicken into tiny pieces and mix with diced potatoes before baking your casserole.

One mistake you may make is garnishing your potatoes with products containing gluten. The first thing to be careful of is mixing wheat flour with potato flour. Gravy is another culprit; most gravy recipes contain flour. Other foods are potato fries and chips and store-bought foods such as potato bread, potato gratin, and instant-mashed potatoes. These foods may contain gluten. Check the labels carefully for clever descriptions that may mislead you.
